A massive fire broke out in SUM hospital on 17th Oct 2016, because of the shot circuit in dialysis ward witnessing over 22 deaths of the patients. The negligence by SUM hospital authorities, who overlooked advisory to improve its firefighting mechanism, cost both innocent lives and also the repute of the organisation.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to Government of Odisha, over the fire incident, at the SUM Hospital in Bhubaneswar.
Under Orissa Fire Service Act, 1993 only three Health care institutions possess fire safety certificate out of nearby 1200. In a very short notice Odisha Government may disqualify the Consent to Operate (CTO) for all the hospitals who do not comply with the fire service act, essentially meaning the fire safety certificate.
Police has arrested four executives of SUM hospital under sections of 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 308 (attempt to culpable homicide) and 285 (negligent conduct of fire matters) of IPC. More arrests are likely to occur.
